Reimer Challenge - Results

Well, the results from the Reimer Family Challenge for April are in. Total savings by cutting our eating out: $133.72 for the month of April.

That's really not bad and we did eat out just a few times during the month. It's not as much as I would have expected but still not an insignificant sum. Of course, I'm sure there are other ways to save on our grocery bills as well but I haven't really found them yet. Typically, there are no coupons for the things we purchase. But, whenever possible, I will try to use coupons for things like shampoos, pharmacy items, etc..

So, it was a successful challenge! The May challenge will simply be trying to stay within our monthly budget! We'll see how that goes!

If anyone has any creative ideas of how to earn extra cash towards our debt retirement, I would love to hear it!!

The Biggest Loser

Recently, a co-worker and I had a somewhat heated debate about the T.V. program, "The Biggest Loser". Let me start by saying that I like this co-worker very much and there were no hard feelings after this discussion (at least not that I was aware of). For the sake of this post and to protect the innocent, I will call my co-worker Betty.

Betty is a big fan of "The Biggest Loser". She said she watches it every week. I, on the other hand, never watch this show because I feel this show only perpetuates the cycle of hatred against the overweight.

Betty said she finds this show to be "inspiring", "uplifting" and it helps her to reach her own weight loss goals. She said when she watches this show it helps her to "go a little longer on the treadmill or workout a little harder". Mind you, Betty does not have a problem with her weight. I'm guessing she weighs about 130lbs at about 5'5" tall. That's pretty "normal" to me.

In response to Betty's comments, I said, "I think anyone who watches that show only wants to make fun of fat people". Perhaps I could have said this differently.

At this point, Betty was really mad but trying to mask it. She rose up to defend this joke of a television show by saying, "That's not true!" "That show is an inspiration to overweight people and I do not watch that show to make fun of anyone!, Betty said. In Betty's defense, she was correct about at least part of what I said. I made a broad reaching statement that is not accurate of everyone who watches that show. I truly believe that Betty's intentions are nothing but what she says they are. Of course, I am overweight, as a majority of our population is, and I find nothing at all "inspirational" about that show.

At this point, other co-workers are getting involved in the debate and Betty is clearly very upset. I explained that this show is only popular because making fun of and vilification of the overweight is one of the last forms of socially acceptable discrimination. (Note that I said, socially acceptable. I am under no illusions that racism in this country is dead. In fact, since Obama was put in office, it's at a fever pitch but that's a whole other blog post!). After some back and forth comments on this issue, Betty got up from the table and left.

When I thought about this later, I realized what I really intended to say was that this show is only on the air because, as a society, it's okay for us to make fun of fat people. It's okay to mask the secret ridicule as "being helpful". It's okay for us to do this because it's almost universally expected that we will make fun of fat people because "it's okay". Question. On this show, typically the participants will work out for hours a day with trainers screaming in their faces and participate in inane "challenges". At the end of a day like this, they go to their shared residence only to find a huge (and I mean huge) pile of cupcakes to tempt them. Is this what true "caring" or "inspiration" is like? No, it's a game. I realize that the winner will take home a huge pile of money as well. Our dirty little secret is that we really want them to eat the cupcakes. What little piggie wont' be able to resist?

I think we have to examine why a show like this is even on the air. What made the producers/creators of this show feel this would be successful? After all, they don't put shows on the air that they know or think will fail, right? Ask yourself this question. If this show were called "The Biggest Gainer" and showed anorexic people trying to gain weight, would it be as popular? No, because somehow we can feel empathy for the anorexic person. They are somehow worthy of our sympathies.

What about "The Biggest Alcoholic" or the "The Biggest Drughead"? Would that draw huge audiences? I can just see it now. "Let's see which junkie falls off the wagon tonight folks!!". Would this show draw huge audiences each week? I don't think so because these people suffer from a "disease" and an "addiction". Oh yeah, and they're probably not fat either!

Why can't fat people be worthy too? People are overweight for a myriad of reasons. Psychological issues, medical issues, bad habits ingrained from childhood and our culture of cheap fast food (which is VERY addictive but again, that's another whole blog post). Why can't we accept that fat people are suffering from a disease and addiction as well? We cannot accept this because we will not accept this. Society says that we should all be the "ideal" of thin and beautiful. We are all fighting so hard to fit this mold that we will do anything to make ourselves feel better when we know we aren't meeting the standard (which no one can meet). We will vilify the overweight to feel better about our own individual position on the "ideal" scale. Someone being fatter than me ultimately makes me feel better about myself.

In 2006, the CDC reports that 67% of adults, 20 years and older, were obese or overweight. I don't deny that this is a serious health crisis. I realize that weighing less can mean a longer, healthier life. I have lived the statistics almost every day of my 41 years. I see the hatred and stereotyping first hand. Just last week a partner in our law firm was talking about another person and made the comment, "He was ugly. Not just ugly but FAT ugly!!". What a shallow, mindless individual. If you haven't lived this day to day, you may think nothing of that comment. Not me. It told me volumes about the type of person she really is. (Not that I didn't know already).

We need to let go of our preconceived notions about the overweight and obese. We are actually hard workers, good friends, fun to be around and also, if you gain weight because we are you are our friends, well that's actually your fault, not ours. (Yes, there was actually a study that said the friends of overweight people tended to eat more than others. So I guess we get to be responsible for the everyone's weight, not just our own!) We're real people with real feelings just like everyone else.

So, what can we do? Well first, stop teaching your kids to hate. By that I mean, stop showing them that you hate yourself because of your body and thereby teaching them the same things. This only perpetuates the cycle. When they dislike their own bodies, their fear of being overweight may naturally show itself in the form of being one more person who thinks, "everybody makes fun of fat people!". Stop buying into the societal pressure to be an unrealistic "ideal". Stop supporting designers (the fashion world in general) that think it's okay to tell us we need to look like a 12 year old boy! Quite frankly, feminists everywhere should be pissed off mad about this subject but I don't see this is a big issue with the N.O.W. Where are you N.O.W??? And, when you see someone who is overweight, I want you to think to yourself, that's a person. A person just like me. It would be nice if you could see an overweight person and think nothing at all but I know that's too much to ask.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not telling you that I have mastered all of these things myself. But, I do think about them and I think the world needs to see a different perspective on shows like this. Ask why. Why would a show like this exist?

Ultimately, until we all decide to accept one another with all of our imperfections, we will all remain "The Biggest Losers"...

21 Days and Counting...

I did intend to update the blog more often this month! It's been a crazy month! My math class is killing me and we've just had tons going on...

So, an update to the Reimer Family April Challenge. We've done pretty good! We have eaten out twice (two lunches on the weekend) and my Boo had to eat out two days because he was at school working on his thesis. It's hard to pack a lunch in those circumstances. I think I have eaten out for lunch with the girls at work one day so far. That is pretty good for us!

It's been a bigger challenge than I imagined. It's not just about eating at home. It's the planning, shopping, cooking at home and then the clean up afterwards. It's very time consuming! One thing I have noticed is that we seem to eat out of boxes a lot. That bothers me but the challenge this month was to just eat at home. If this proves to be a success then maybe we can move on to eating less processed food and more real food.

So, 9 days to go and we will tally up the receipts and see if this little experiment really saved us some cash! For now...

Already Wanna Jump Ship

Yes, it's day 2 and I already want to jump ship and eat out. When you drive by a "Taco Bell" and think, "hum...that sounds good", you know it's bad!

Yesterday, day one, was not so bad. We were at work and the boss brought in a nice pizza/salad lunch for all of us. We didn't pay for it so it didn't count as "eating out" for us. Yesterday, my Boo and I both decided to get sick so last night we were both feeling bad enough that dinner really was no big deal. Today, I felt better but my Boo is still running a fever and not feeling good. He has slept a lot today and of course, I've been dreaming about eating out. I even got a little fussy this afternoon at the thought of trying to decide what to make for dinner and then having to clean up after making it! I think I literally whined about it. I have to remember that this is also how it was when I first gave up sodas. Well, I was actually in tears by day 2 on that one but whatever, it was bad!

So, I eventually sucked it up and made something at home! I think weekends will be the hardest time for us. That's when we normally eat out and it's the time when I'm busy catching up on all the things I don't have time for during the week which means I don't have time to cook either. Work and School keeps me running during the week so my weekends are precious time to me and I don't want to spend it in the kitchen (any more than I already do keeping it clean)! So, it will be a challenge to prioritize my time and try to make the time to eat at home.

Well, tomorrow is Day 3. 28 more days to go!

Reimer Family Challenge - April

I've been saying for years that I needed to give up my beloved Diet Cokes. One friend has told me for years that Cokes (and most soda pop in general) are the "cigarette of the future". One day all will be known and Coca-Cola will have to admit (after revealing documents are found) that they knew how bad all the chemicals were for you and huge settlements will ensue. While we can't be certain that will happen, I do know that the host of chemicals and myriad of grody things in these drinks cannot possibly good for you. So, at the start of Lent this year, some of my work friends asked me to join them in giving up something in honor of Christ during Lent. Even today, I'm not certain what made me take up this challenge but I did and ultimately I'm glad. As of tomorrow, I will have gone approximately six weeks without Diet Cokes (or any sodas) and my other crutch, artificial sweeteners. I've come to believe through my own research that artificial sweeteners can't be good for you either. I must give kudos to my Boo who gave these up with me to be supportive! Sweet hubby...

Spurned on by my apparent ability to get past my Diet Coke and artificial sweetener addictions, I decided to try a few more things and see how they go. Don't get me wrong, my Diet Coke addiction is a day to day thing. I can't believe how much I can still crave them but it has gotten somewhat better.

So, after this recent success and watching the documentary "Food Inc." I've been inspired to challenge our little family of two to several small, monthly changes centered around eating and food to see if we truly can overhaul our eating habits and lifestyles. For once in my life, this is NOT, I repeat NOT going to be about losing a certain amount of weight or fitting in to a certain size. That is nothing more than perpetuating the cycle of weight loss/weight gain/self hatred and buying into the societal nonsense that says we all have to be stick thin and a size 2 to be accepted. Accept me or don't, I will never be a size 2. (That is a a whole other blog post!).

The April challenge is very simple. We are going to see if we can eat at home for every meal for the entire 30 days of April. For now, I don't care what we eat as long as we eat it at home. If my Boo wants a Totino's pizza during this challenge, have at it!

There are certain variables that I will allow for in the challenge such as:

1. A meal out with family members as Sunday after church lunches do sometimes happen.

2. Certain events (usually work related) where eating out is part of the deal.

The April challenge is meant to answer a few questions:

1. Can we really eat at home for 30 days straight?

2. Can we really save money by eating at home?

3. Do we notice any health differences by simply eating at home? (Good or Bad).

I will be blogging during this process so check back during the month to see how it's going! So, The challenge starts Thursday! Wish us luck!

Ramblings...

Wow, I haven't posted in ages! I often have the thought, "I should blog about this" or "This is SO blogworthy" but then time slips away and I never get around to it. Work, the house, and everything else leaves me little time these days...

So, in honor of waking up at 7:45am on a Sunday, here's a few ramblings for you:

First, I love "Twilight". Darn it, I can't help it.

I got "bitten", if you will, by the vampire bug. I'm even listening to the soundtrack now, which has a some cool songs on it. It's funny I love the movie, but hated the book the first time I tried reading it. Spurred on by my new bug of the vampire virus, I'm going to try to read it again. I'm completely stoked about seeing "New Moon" next month as well. What can I say? I never really grew out of these things...

My Boo and I went to see Mary Poppins this past week. I won tickets on Facebook by being the first person to correctly define "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". (Sp???). We walked in and the first thing my Boo said was "I didn't think there would be this many kids here!". Well, it was Mary Poppins we decided. All the little people aside, it was a really cute show with cool sets, colorful costumes and fun songs. My advice, if you go see this show, don't sit too close to the stage. We were able to see the wires and other things that would have been hidden if we were not so close. Even seeing the wires, it was amazing some of the things they did. At one point, the character Bert, walks up one side of the stage (the wall), across the top, tap dances upside down and walks back down the other side of the stage. Even seeing the wire, I was still amazed that someone could do that. I still haven't figured out how they made her fly over the audience but it was very fun. If you have a chance to see it while it's here, I would recommend it.

Work. Well, work is good some days and not so good other days. I do enjoy most of the people I work with (Boo especially) but I have these moments when I think, "What in the hell am I doing here?!?". I hate that feeling. I know many people who are just fine taking a little time to "coast" in life. I'm not one of those people. It bothers me to think that I'm in a job where I will not learn anything new, never move up or really make any difference to anyone. That's pretty much how I'm feeling at this point. The hard part is deciding what purpose it can serve me. Of course, it helps pay my bills right now but long term, what is the point of this job? Is it time to look around, perhaps dip my big toe in the mortgage waters again? Or, is it time to stay here and go back to school part time until it's time to go to school full time and see this position as a "means to an end"? I haven't quite figured it out yet but I need to make a decision quickly. I think the attorney I work with will be a partner soon and that means he won't just be somewhat of an arse but a complete arse! If I have a goal in my mind, that will help me keep my comments silent rather than out loud...

There are many things political that I want to blog about and catch up on but I need to gather my thoughts and put something together that will actually make sense!

Miscellaneous Updates and Ramblings...

Well, this is a totally random list of postings but here goes:

First, WE ARE MOVING BACK TO CIVILIZATION!! Woo-Hoo! We have the inspection on the house we are buying on Wednesday, so provided that everything goes well, we are moving the first of March. I can't wait!! We spent a little bit more than what we wanted to but in the end it's a good thing. I love the house and the neighborhood and that's important since my Boo has threatened to make me live there the next 75 years.

Along that same line, we actually got to meet the seller of our house this past weekend. I made the Boo drive me by since I realized I had not actually seen it in daylight hours! We were talking with some friends who already live in this hood and I noticed that people were at our house! I deceided to stroll down and introduce myself. Turns out, I got to meet the seller, Delores, her daughter Gwen (who had an Obama/Biden sticker on her car!) and the listing agent Geneva. Delores looks to be in her late seventies and is moving to an assisted living center in Kirby/59 area. She was a completely delightful person and she is the original owner of our house. She has lived there for over 30 years. She took us around the house and shared some of her memories from the house and her husband (who passed away about 18 years ago). She even remembers dealing with the builder when they were buying the house and what items were upgrades! She tried to sell us her dining room table and hutch! I'm tempted to buy them just so a little piece of her can stay in the house. Meeting her made me feel even better about our home choice. I enjoyed talking with her so much and I hope that she will be as happy in her new home and she was in the old one.

Second, I'm so ticked off about Allstate insurance. It's a long story but they have given me some completely ridiculous quotes for homeowners insurance and flood insurance for our house. I think the Insurance industry, second only to credit card companies, are the biggest scam artists in this country (and probably the world). You buy insurance for several reasons:
1. Because you have to.
2. To protect yourself, your family and posessions against different perils.
3. Because you have to.

Here's what you get in return:

1. A complete lack of customer service.
2. If you actually make a claim they either (a) drop you or (b) make your premiums so huge that you have no choice but to drop them. Damned if you do or damned if you don't!
3. Companies that make the rules up as they go along.
4. Make up rules to NOT pay claims as they see fit.
5. Use poor credit scores to hypothesize that you will make claims-completely ridiculous! They are completely credit score driven and give no thought whatsoever to the reason a person may have a low credit score. Our scores are very high and we're still getting the run around about high premiums!

It is a complete scam. Again, aside from credit card companies, the insurance industry desperately needs further regulation by the Federal government. Not State government, but we need new FEDERAL laws that put these jokers in line. State laws just mean they move to another state to abide by softer rules. Notice that these companies are not asking for bailout money! Know why? They don't have to! They are incredibly profitable. They are profit making machines! I have nothing against a company making a profit but when you do it at the expense of your insured policy holders, that's criminal. I hope this industry gets the major reforms it deserves right up the wahzoo!

What is up with Christian Bale? It seems he's a hot tempered little thing! First, just before the release of The Dark Knight last year, he gets arrested for beating up on his Mom and sisters. Now, he's cussing out people on the movie sets. Give me a break. Dude, you need a serious reality check. I like you Christian but tone down the "star" attitude, please! You get paid mucho dollars for pretending to be someone else. You really should be more laid back for a guy with such an easy job! More importantly, you will never make the exempt list like this...

It's been a long time since I've blogged! I guess I could give a little update. Our holidays were great. We spent Christmas in Dallas with my family and then it was up to Kansas to visit with the hubby's relatives. Then, over the first weekend of January, we had Christmas with the hubby's immediate family back in Houston. Lots of fun was had by all. Since the first of the year, we have been looking for houses. Those of you who read my Boo's blog know that whole story. I have another house that I found this weekend. I really like it but I'm going to make a pretty low offer on this one too (we're in a recession dang it!!) and try to get a good deal out of this guy. Even my "low" offer is still above the average square foot price for the neighborhood but he has done some very nice improvements. (As long as the walls aren't leaking!!) But, after 15 years of the mortgage business and underwriting, I know one thing. Cost is NOT value. If you put $15,000 of improvements in your house, your value does not increase $15,000. It's not a dollar for dollar thing even with something major like a swimming pool, etc. We'll see if he bites. The 2008 taxes on the property have not been paid and he's hanging on for dear life to a buyer who can't get their financing. He's basically told me that if my offer is not good enough, he's sticking with the buyers who will probably never close. Oh well, the first rule of negotiations is...you gotta be willing to walk away! AND, I am. The market is not totally bad in Houston, but it ain't great either, and I want a good deal. There are way too many houses just sitting on the market to not get a great deal right now. I will update more on the house later....

Rick Warren, What's the Big Deal??

President-elect Barack Obama has chosen California pastor, Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration in January. I've seen many articles criticizing Obama for this choice. Why?

This article on CNN.com written by Kathryn Kolbert states that Warren doesn't "deserve" the special honor of giving the invocation because he is pro-life, supported prop 8, and opposes stem cell research. And?? What the heck do people expect? A Christian pastor who is pro-choice, didn't support prop 8 and is gung ho about stem cell research? Give me a break! Personally, I don't like this choice because Warren wrote what is absolutely the most stupid book I've ever attempted to read. "The Purpose Driven Life". What a total waste of paper. If you're Christian, you have all the purpose you freakin' need people! But, I'm digressing.

If Obama is of the Christian faith, it makes sense that he would choose a Christian pastor to do the invocation. I think it would be rather hard to find a pastor that supports all of these issues. I guess he could choose a homosexual pastor who supports gay marriage but most likely he will not support the other two issues. Also, she gave absolutely no credit to Warren for all of the good he and his church have done in the world. Frankly, I'm tired of Christians being slammed all the time for the beliefs we hold. I don't shove my beliefs down any one's throat but that doesn't mean I'm going to compromise them either. I think homosexual couples should be allowed to marry. In my mind, it's a civil rights issues. My religious beliefs about homosexuality don't have to be everyone else's beliefs. I would never, under any circumstances, choose to have an abortion but the Supreme Court has made the decision. Sometimes personal, religious beliefs don't mesh with modern day laws. Obama was slammed a few months ago for Reverend Wright and his so called "hate sermons." Now, he slammed for picking someone who in the world of Christianity at least, is considered a watered down, moderate Christian. Obama is "damned if he does and damned if he doesn't." Lay off of Obama. He fought a long, hard campaign and he won. Let him choose whoever he wants to do the invocation.

"Obesity Tax"

As always, once government decides to "solve" a problem and dictate personal behavior, it ends up being a complete disaster. Now, Governor of New York, David Paterson, (yeah the blind guy that SNL made fun of) has decided to introduce the "Obesity Tax". See article here.

So, now all soft drinks (non diet) and juice drinks that are less than 70% real juice will be taxed 18%. The governor likens this to the supposed success of the cigarette tax. There are several flaws I see in this argument. Of course, my regular readers realize how I feel about the subject of being obese in America. And, don't get me wrong. I cringe when I see kids drinking soft drinks.

1. The obese are "taxed" enough in this country by the onslaught of stigmatization they face on a daily basis. (Kids included)

2. You cannot govern personal behavior. To say that the cigarette tax is the ONLY reason that smoking has declined does not take into account the change in attitudes toward smoking and smokers in this country. People will still drink alcohol, smoke and drink regular coke even if they pay a higher tax.

3. What about the junk food in the schools and the crap food that parents are serving them at home?

4. What about parents who use the T.V. as their babysitter and have kids who NEVER go outside and actually play??

5. How about not taking P.E. class time out of the schools so the kids can spend useless time trying to pass standardized tests that don't really measure learning?

6. How about teaching our children moderation. How about parenting them and saying "no" when they need to hear it. (This would probably be good in areas other than eating as well!)

So, in my opinion, this is just another useless tax that will do little to change the actual problem of childhood obesity. Parents need to parent. Parents have to teach their kids moderation and slap their hand once in a while when they get in the cookie jar one too many times. The government cannot solve this problem. This problem will only be solved in the homes of America when we decide it's time to take personal responsibility and govern ourselves.

Oh gosh, I laugh every time I see it. I guess the secret service is tired of him too since it took the second shoe almost landing on his head for them to even get up!! Also, you know this reporter will be the newest "detainee" at Gitmo! Well, I know he's the President and a certain amount of respect goes along with that title but honestly, I'm jealous. I want to try it too! I'm envisioning a new game at the State Fair this year!! AND..look at "W"! He's got some serious moves that probably saved him from a major black eye! (Although, his legacy is not so lucky!)

Christmas Past

I love satellite radio, especially at Christmas when I can listen to non stop Christmas music on the "Holly" channel...

It drives my Boo crazy but he listens because he knows I love it. There are a few songs that come on that I will sing away to and he's like "who is that?" What's "band aid?" Wham??!?? So, Boo, here you go...some oldies but goodies...

A New Senator Kennedy?

I read that Caroline Kennedy is very interested in Senator Clinton's seat when she is confirmed as the new Secretary of State for President-elect Obama.

Why do I get the feeling that some think she would do a good job merely because her last name is Kennedy? I don't really know much about her education, career, etc. but I can't help but think that if her name were not Kennedy, we wouldn't be talking about her taking Senator Clinton's seat.

Yes, I have my very first real Christmas tree this year. It's our eclectic tree this year. We have our lovely Lenox snowflake ornaments, various ornaments that we've collected from different vacations to New York, hand blown glass ornaments from my Boo's granddad from over the years and our Swarovski crystal star ornaments that I love so much.

This was before we pushed it back in the corner. It turned our pretty cute and putting up each ornament is like going back and remembering the time you bought it or the person who gave it to you. I love that. I always write on the box when the ornaments were bought, the date and where they were purchased. Unless, of course, someone gave it to us, then I record that information. I didn't do the Radko tree this year. There's just not enough room for a huge tree like that. I will be making my stop at North Pole City in Oklahoma City on our way to Kansas to peruse their Radko collection. They have a great selection and unique Radko's that you can't find anywhere else. Maybe next year they will an appearance. Normally, we have about four trees, each with their own themes. The Radko ornament tree, the Lenox tree, etc.. But, for this year, less is more (we only have 500 lights on this tree if you can believe that!) and I'm perfectly happy with "less"...

Nintendo Wii

While babysitting the Binjo children Friday night, I got to see them in action with their Nintendo Wii. It was so fun. Not only were they having fun, but they were moving and sweating while they were doing it. I know that sounds crazy but they were playing these games and swinging their arms, kicking their legs and jumping up and down. It's not a replacement for playing outside but it sure works on a cold Friday night! It was completely entertaining to watch and even more fun to do... I totally have to have one!

Dear Mr. Shyamalan,

I recently viewed your film, The Happening on DVD. All I can say is, what a complete waste of two valuable hours of my life. Plants attacking humans? What a stinker..I had previously sworn off of your films because they were such a huge disappointment. You had a great start. The Sixth Sense was a great film with an ending that totally surprised me. I still love that movie. Then, I caught the flick, The Village. WTF? That was just about as stupid as The Happening. Something happened after that initial success of The Sixth Sense. You starting trying too hard or something. You're trying to make a statement or something. It was all down hill. I completely ignored The Lady in the Water because I knew that would be ignorant, even with Paul Giamatti. Marky Mark couldn't even save The Happening and he came back from the "funky bunch" to be a huge movie star!! Mel Gibson couldn't make The Signs worth watching. I mean, really, guys dressed up in alien suits? You could have at least budgeted for some awesome CGI don't you think? Really, this isn't the Disney channel.

So, now I will have to completely swear off of your films, other than watching The Sixth Sense occasionally. Please, stop trying to make statements and get back to entertaining. Take some time, work on those endings which have been so horrible since that first success. I know you can do it, after all, you did it once. Now, do it again...

So, I have gotten into this really bad habit of taking photos of people and things that I find funny so that I can post them on my blog. Maybe it's not such a bad habit. I don't know. This blog is about some of those random photos and just very random thoughts as well. I thought it would be a nice break from the grueling political season. Here we go...

Okay, so do any of you remember those horrid "Rabbit Fur" coats from the 80's? Well, "Rabbit Fur" is making a comeback. Yes, right here in the fashion mecca of Spring/The Woodlands, Texas. Check this out...

Yes, that looks like a "rabbit fur" purse! Ladies, I know you're jealous! Now, I can't guarantee that it is a gen-u-whine rabbit fur purse but let's give her the benefit of the doubt. And, I snapped this at our local Whataburger no less! Next...
What?!?! Yes, I took this photo right here in Spring, Texas also. This is what I live with on a daily basis now. Rabbit fur purse toting Israeli Defensive Trainers....What the heck is this? I think our lovely "Department of Homeland Security" should be checking this guy out. Something tells me that if he were legit, he wouldn't advertise it on the back of his truck...weirdness...

I almost died laughing when I saw this posted on the bathroom door at our office. Wow, someone really hates it when people talk on the phone in the potty! First, it cracks me up that they were mad enough to go back to their desk, write a note and come back to stick it on the door. Second, the response is pretty hilarious too. "Who R U, Phone Police?" Too funny. Now, I hate it when people talk on their cell phones in the bathroom stall next to me too but I take a different tactic. I flush the toilet like five or six times in a row just to be sure that the person on the other end of the line knows where they are! Is talking on the cell phone in the potty a First Amendment protected free speech? (Something tells me I will get a comment to answer that question!)

Random thoughts for today.........

1. I had a dream last night that I was dog-sitting for someone and one of the dogs died. What a nightmare! (Just FYI, I didn't know the person who was my "friend" in the dream!)
2. I'm getting my teeth cleaned today. (again..)
3. "The Dark Knight" is at the dollar movies this weekend. I may go see it again but I may take my Boo to see the new 007 movie. I'll let you know...
4. I'm really wishing I had taken a photo of the grown adult wearing a tie dye "onesie" at the Bayou City Art Festival a few weeks back..dang..lost opportunity that I'll never get back.
5. Why doesn't SIRIUS have their Christmas music channel on yet?!? XM always had their Christmas music on by now. What's the deal???
F. I have to go get in the shower now so I will have time to get my required daily dose of CNN before I leave for the day.

The last numbers I saw had him with a a win of over 176 electoral votes, 6% AND...(drum roll)...over SEVEN MILLION MORE PEOPLE IN THE POPULAR VOTE. He won, the people have spoken, the country is electrified and excited again, get over it.

A World of Good Will

Christiane Amanpour, CNN International Correspondent, said she was in Times Square and has never seen anything like this in U.S. elections. She likened the dancing in the streets in Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Atlanta and other American cities to what she has seen in countries that experience their very first democratic elections. What an appropriate comparison. The long lines to vote, the excitement and the historic choice of an African American President. I'm so excited about our country right now!

The Electoral College

I have often wondered why we elect Presidents through the Electoral College. The Electoral College began as compromise between the founding fathers to elect the President by Congress or by popular vote. I think this made perfect sense at the time taking into consideration how time consuming and tedious a popular vote would have been at the time and electing the President by Congress doesn't seem very democratic. The people of the United States vote for electors who then in turn vote for the President. There are actually some states who do not legally require that the electors vote for the candidate of their states popular vote. Scary. Each state is allocated electors based on their number of U.S. Senators (2) and U.S. Representatives. Of course, our representation is determined by U.S. Census. So, don't hide from the Census next time they come around (every ten years) which should be soon!

I wonder why, in 2008, we cannot go to a nationwide system of popular vote. The Electoral College was a brilliant solution at the start of our nation but now, we live in the computer age. We could very easily tabulate votes and elect a President by popular vote. I know, some will say that this would be dangerous because of security issues and someone hacking in to change the election but we already have these problems. I know that it would be costly as well but if it gets more Americans to the polls because they feel their vote actually counts, let's do it. Also, why have any chance that some goofy elector may decide on their own to vote for someone other than the candidate of choice for their state? I realize this probably would never happen and there are actually some things in place to help prevent it but at the end of the day, people feel their votes don't really count. Elect by popular vote!

Do Bird of a Feather Really Flock Together?

I have used this saying for many years and I have usually believed it. But, when I see this week that Palin is trying to tie yet another "radical" to Obama, I wonder...

First, this is again, a desperation move. So far, Obama is a Muslim terrorist who just happens to have a Christian "radical" pastor, and is friends with William Ayers, and now he is best buds with a supposed "advisor" to the PLO (which he has denied). Oh yeah, and as of today his Aunt is an illegal immigrant.

So, who do you hang out with? Do you hang with people just like you or do you hang with some folks who might disagree with you on religion, abortion, death penalty, etc.. If you don't, I feel bad for you. You're really missing out. I don't think that if I have dinner with a pro-choice friend that I will somehow be tied to everything that person believes. If I have a friend who wants to see a little more civil disobedience (not blowing people up obviously) that anyone should assume that I believe the same thing. How are we supposed to have intelligent debate if we are never around others who have a different opinions from our own. It's like having a life of one big pat on the back for yourself. Sometimes, through work, school and other activities we meet people that are not just like us. Do you take the time to know them or do you think, "oh, I just work with him/her"?

And, let's think, who else in history hung around people who didn't think like them?? Hum, who could it be? Who is it? Jesus, perhaps?? Now, I'm never friends with someone just to see them change their opinions. I'm friends to be friends but how can anyone ever see another view if they don't see yours in a non-threatening way?? I'm not just talking about religion either.

So, go on Obama. Have friends that don't think just like you. Have some "radicals" around you. I don't think that means you agree, in fact, you could be like me. It may mean you disagree.

Joe The Plumber..Stumpin' For McCain!

They have this complete dullard campaigning in Ohio right now and he basically has no idea what he's talking about. He agreed with some other nitwit that "Obama would be the death of Israel!" Can we have a little more fear mongering please? I haven't had quite enough from our current, no where to be seen President.

I don't think he even knows why Obama would be "the death of Israel." I guess Palin's foreign policy experience wasn't winning over voters so they tried this guy out! Tensions in the McCain/Palin Camp?

Say it ain't so! It appears that some in the McCain camp have called Palin a "diva" among other things because she decided to go "off message" recently with some of her comments. I'm not sure what's worse. The fact that the McCain camp feels that she shouldn't speak freely (which is painfully obvious by the lack of her press conferences) or the fact that she's obviously stumping for 2016. Scary, very scary indeed!

I guess tensions are normal when you're behind 8 - 10 points in the last week before the election.

Miscellaneous Update

First, here's my nifty little fall harvest display outside my front door. A few of these pumpkins may get carved for Halloween but I like them like this so I may leave it as is...

And..I was asked by the Boo's new boss ladies if I would help them out since they are in need of a new legal assistant and someone just quit. Apparently, they have a few trials coming up and the paralegal is up to her eyeballs. So, I will be working there for at least a few weeks to help them out but it's strictly temporary. The partners were very nice and I was very impressed. Of course, they love my Boo so that means they're incredibly smart as well. They even offered to help me in my job search if I want to stay in the legal field. That was very kind as well. Nothing like having a partner at a well respected firm give you the "thumbs up."

Last week, I received a package from VW. As you all know, I purchased a 2009 GTI in August, which I am loving. So, here's what I got from Fed Ex from VW. It's called a "fast."Yeah, I'm not sure why they sent it or what exactly it is but I'm sure I could have come up with something better. Couldn't they have sent me an iTunes gift card or something I would actually use? See that stubby little tail in the back? It comes with three others so you can change out it's tail. Actually, it reminds me of my old boss so maybe I'll go across the street and sit it on her car or something. Just Kidding!!

I had a great weekend. Not only was the weather great but we had some fun activities as well. On Saturday, the Boo and I along with our friend Beth wandered on down to the Bayou City Arts Festival. The Boo and I have gone several times and always find plenty of great art and usually go home with some nice tidbit that we enjoy. One year it was a small clay mini dachshund that we decided to call "Art." Art now lives on the bookshelf in our study. This year, my Boo bought me two 10 x 10 prints from Austin artist Kathy Womack and her "Women and Wine" series. I have no idea why these appeal to me so much since I'm not a skinny, well dressed, wine drinking woman but I love them. Here are the two prints I got this weekend...

I would love to have one of the $700 prints or maybe an original at $8,000 but the budget doesn't really allow for that just yet. One day... Jump on over to see more of Kathy's work. Then, on Sunday, after church, we went to do some pumpkin shopping. I got some great pumpkins at Kroger and a huge mum from the Heeb. My front patio is officially in fall harvest mode now. (I love fall and fall harvest decor for those who may not know!) Two pumpkins are for carving a little closer to Halloween. Sunday evening we had dinner with the Boo's mom at Pei Wei and a nice cup of hot chocolate from Starbucks. It was a great way to end a great weekend!

History For Kids (Big and Small)

I confess, I love School House Rock. I remember watching these on TV when I was just a wee child. (Meaning a very long time ago). I am amazed at how much kids and adults can learn from these little three minute singing cartoons. They are so clever and full of great subject matter. For instance, I was singing the Preamble to the Constitution before I even knew what it was...

"The Preamble" is hands down my favorite School House Rock episode!
Many of these episodes deal with American history like this old favorite...

They also teach children (and remind adults) of very important principles. I think this one is valuable for us to remember at this time...

My favorite line in that, "anyone can be President no matter skin or religion." It would do us all well to remember that right now...

School House Rock also teaches government, math and grammar. I even saw one that explains Wall Street and Investing!! If I ever have kids, these will cartoons will be "must see TV" in our house.

Campbell Brown, CNN Correspondent, has an excellent article on CNN.com today. I felt that it was worth posting here on my blog. (Side Note: Campbell Brown is quickly becoming my new favorite political analyst since the untimely passing of the great Tim Russert who I enjoyed watching almost every Sunday.) I find it difficult to believe that this is still an issue. I find it difficult to believe that people still believe this nonsense. I also cannot believe that we are still such a racist country. I was at a hair appointment last week and I have known my hairdresser for many years. I know she's Republican. She feels that history will eventually show that Bush was a great leader and he will be praised for his leadership in the annals of time. I seriously doubt it. Last week, she told me there was only one reason she did not care for Obama. ONE reason. (Just for the record, I did not start this conversation.) So, what was that one reason? The fact that he's a Muslim. If my total exasperation had not exceeded my anger, I probably would have left. Are we really this gullible? Does no one bother to think for themselves any longer? If one were thinking and doing their own homework, they would find this is completely false. And people call ME the Conspiracy Theorist??!? Also, in my opinion, saying that someone is "Muslim" these days is just another term for saying "black" so we can attempt to hide our racism. Christians, we're the WORST!! We think that anyone who doesn't have the same faith that we do can't possibly hold the highest office in our nation. After all, we are a Christian nation and should be led by a Christian leader, right?? (Said with complete sarcasm by the way!) I realize these blanket statements do not encompass every American or Christian or Republican, Democrat or Independent. I'm just losing faith in us as a society. I've come across so many individuals lately who just seem unconcerned and are happy to be ill informed and misled. So, on to that post by Campbell Brown...

Rock on Campbell! I also give kudos to Senator McCain for correcting this person and taking the microphone out of her hand as soon as he heard it. That's what I have needed to see from him for months now. Doesn't change my vote but it heightens my opinion of him to a certain degree. Also, for those McCain voters, and you know who you are, who still want to talk about Obama being Muslim, Arab, whatever, your own candidate just said that's not factual. Please, for everyone's benefit, listen.

Let's Talk About One Of McCain's Endorsements

Senator McCain has been endorsed by a radical pastor from San Antonio, John Hagee. Let's just see what John Hagee has said about the holocaust and how McCain was happy to have his endorsement.

Now, for a little back tracking...

Can we believe him when he says he agrees with some of what Hagee does and says and not all of what Hagee does and says? Is this possible? Apparently, it's possible for McCain, but not for Obama who has said the same thing about Reverend Wright.

Well, at least it's good to know that Hagee doesn't think Obama is the anti-christ! Whew, I can rest easy at night now...

I think everyone needs to realize that candidates don't always agree with everything that everyone who endorses them believes. I am pro-life and I know that Obama does not agree with that stance. I do not believe that the abortion issue is the "be all, end all" of each candidate and that is why I will support Obama. I am so tired of people talking about "Obama is a muslim", "Obama is a radical islamist". Is this all they can come up with? You know what, I believe McCain when he says he does not agree with Hagee's hate mongering of catholics and others. I believe Obama when he says he does not accept the endorsement of The Nation of Islam or Louis Farrakhan. I also believe Obama when he says he doesn't always agree with Reverend Wright. I went to a church for years and I hardly agreed with anything I heard from the pulpit. Does that mean I endorse them? No. So, let's try to stop all of the nonsense and stick to the facts.

I'm so tired of hearing this name. I admit, I don't know quite enough about his presidency. He was an actor, he almost got assassinated, he invented "Reaganomics" along with "trickle down economics" (which don't work by the way), and was the one who uttered, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." He was a highly regarded and well loved President in the 80's although some have said he couldn't put a coherent sentence together without the help of his aides. (Not certain if that's true.) Scary, sounds like our current Commander in Chief. He's one of many people that I've heard McCain refer to as his "hero." Now, can we please stop talking about him already?!?!

Here is a little part of a conversation I overheard yesterday at Half Price Bookstore in the clearance fiction section. This conversation took place between a mother and daughter. The mother was probably mid 60's and the daughter was at least mid 30's.

MOM: "So are you going to vote before you leave?"
DAUGHTER: "No."
MOM: "Oh, so you're going to absentee vote?"
DAUGHTER: "No."
MOM: "So, when are you going to vote?"
DAUGHTER: (No Answer, just silence)
MOM: "You're not going to vote are you!?" (Stunned)
DAUGHTER: "No."
MOM: "Why not? You just don't care do you?"
DAUGHTER: "No."
MOM: "Why not?"
DAUGHTER: "The race has already been decided. The President is not elected by popular vote but by senators who control the electoral college."
MOM: "That's not really accurate. You're not concerned with how this affects you at all are you?"
DAUGHTER: "No."
MOM: "Well, you should be!"

This is completely amazing to me. I have no tolerance for people who just don't bother to vote, especially those of minorities or women who had to fight to get the right to do so.

Do you think these women would make excuses as to why they could or should not vote? This photo, credit to the Library of Congress, is of women at the ballot box in 1917 in New York. Do you think they would appreciate the lame excuse of this female as to why she would not vote? In my opinion, it is nothing more than a decision to be mindless and unconcerned if not a little lazy. I don't want to hear the reasoning of "I don't like either candidate." I understand this predicament as it has often been true with me. At the same time, I feel that I have a duty. I have a hard fought for responsibility to allow my voice to be heard and to honor the work of past generations who have allowed me the privilege of voting! Don't we understand that voting is a privilege? Where did we get the idea that it was acceptable to not vote? Why do more and more American's subscribe to this notion that they don't care about our government and leadership enough to make a well thought out decision and place their vote at the ballot box? I suspect that it has gone the same direction as our priorities with our kids in school. We value sports & cheerleading more than science and math. Yes, perhaps, this phenomenon has something to do with our values. What do we value? What do you value? You don't have to be a news, politics junkie like me. Just listen. Listen to what the candidates are saying. Do your own research. Then VOTE on November 4th.

Friday Night Scrapbooking..

Last night my friend Beth and I went to the crack house for scrapbookers located in Katy. It's a store called Archivers and they have absolutely everything a scraping heart desires! They have these marathon scrapbooking sessions. Women bring all, and I mean all, of their various tools, stickers, pens, rubber stamps, papers etc..and scrap for five hours straight. I saw several ladies make 3 or 4 trips to their car to take stuff out when it was over. My nifty XXL rolling crop bag came in very handy and worked like a charm. Of course, I still had other stuff! Some sessions are "12 hour crops!" So, you pay $15 bucks, they feed you pizza and snacks, put the radio on Sirius Jukebox and keep the store open late for you so you can sit with your gal pals and scrap. This is not where this store makes their money. You, as a registered scrapper, can RUN A TAB while you're at the store scrapbooking. Yes, I said run a tab. It's a bar for the scrapbooking addicted. So, if you're not happy with how a page is turning out, what do you do? Well, you go out to the store and find something that makes you happy of course!! You see someone using a scrapbooking technique you don't know about, what do you do? You learn how to do it and buy all the stuff you need of course! Let's just say I had a little sticker shock when I went to pay my "tab" last night. I was afraid my hubby would make me sell my car or something! But, it was a blast. We had fun talking to the girls next to us and you can get tons of ideas just by looking around your table and learn lots of fun new things.

So, I will be posting a few items for the Christmas wish list. Yes, there were things I actually didn't purchase last night and I still had sticker shock. Thanks Beth, for re-igniting my scrapbooking flame!

Justice Delayed

I realize that O.J. Simpson was not on trial again for the murder of his wife and Ron Goldman, but, somehow this feels like O.J. could finally get what he deserves. I heard that he was convicted on all 12 counts of armed robbery and kidnapping charges. The kicker? He could spend life in prison which is exactly what he deserved for murdering his wife and Ron Goldman. Yes, I realize he was found "not guilty" in that trial but let's also realize that he was guilty as sin. He had a great, highly paid legal staff who did what they were hired to do and ultimately, a prosecuting team that underestimated that legal team, the value of race over sex and failed the people.

I know, I know, he isn't "technically" guilty for murdering those two people! He cannot be tried again for that charge. I live with a lawyer, so I understand this fact. I get it, but I can't help but smile to think that his arse will be in prison instead of on the golf course. I can't help but think that the Brown and Goldman famalies are at least smiling somewhere even if it's only on the inside where only they can see...

Babysitting Blues

I was flipping around the telly this morning and came across an old movie that I saw years ago called "Adventures in Babysitting." The movie was released in 1987 so that dates me a little! I remember thinking this movie was fun so I watched for a few minutes and kept looking at the people and wondering where I knew them from...

I IMDB'd the movie and noticed several people that I was surprised about!

1. Anthony Rapp from "Rent" fame plays Daryl Coopersmith, the annoying best friend. He looked so different as a kid!

2. Elizabeth Shue - of course I recognized her..She looks almost the same!

3. Bradley Whitford from "The West Wing" playing Elizabeth's bully boyfriend.

4. Vincent D'Onofrio from Law & Order Criminal Intent plays a garage owner and he looks totally different!

Put Some Stank On It!!

This is what I was wishing for in last night's debate. Let's face it, Biden won. He had actual facts and numbers and at one point he actually had to explain to her what power the Vice President actually holds. She was mispronouncing names, and even got a few completely wrong which Biden did not call her on. I would have called her on it, but, I'm a woman and the public in general would have not reacted well if he had hit her hard on anything. I realize this. At the end of the day, Palin was the same. Yes, she was more well rehearsed as evidenced by all of her answers. She was totally going back to subjects that she had practiced instead of actually answering the questions. There was the usual "you betcha", "you're darn right" and "I'm a hockey Mom" crap... Biden scored major cool points when he got choked up talking about his kids and said "how dare you" think that just because he's man he isn't concerned!!

At the end, I would hope that the public can sense that she is all rehearsed talk and nothing more. Biden is clearly the most capable.

Let's Discuss "Elitism"

So, I see on CNN this afternoon that Sarah Palin now thinks that the reason people don't like her is that she is a "regular gal" running for the Vice Presidency and that the "elitist" don't want her to succeed.

First, I would think that an "elitist" would be one, like for instance, McCain, who can't even remember how many homes he owns. I know exactly how many homes I own. I own one. If I owned fifty, I would know that also. Sounds like the pot ticket calling the kettle ticket black. I also think that anyone who owns a 14 bedroom, 13 1/2 bath, six + car garage, air condition play house, 15,000 square foot house is probably part of the "elite." Well, when I think of "elite" that's close to what would come to my mind.

Second, "elitism" has nothing to do with my dislike of Sarah Palin. Guess what Sarah. I'm a "regular gal" and I don't like you because you're not the right person for the job, period. I don't like her because she wants to be a "pit bull in lipstick" which is, in my opinion, an insult to women. Why does she feel she has to act like that to be taken seriously (skirt and all)? Maybe she's doing it for McCain since he can't or won't do it himself. Now Palin is saying that she's just like "Joe six pack" Americans. Well, she's not like me. I'm much more well informed than she ever was before her "debate boot camp." And, now, when asked by Katie Couric, which magazines she read in order to be informed about world matters, she can't even remember them. My guess is that's because she was too busy "moose hunting" and "fishing" to keep track of anything outside of Alaska. Oh, except keeping her eye on Russia! You know what I read when I read magazines? Newsweek, Time, Chronicle, and oh, my Scrapbooking magazine!

I seriously cannot wait for this debate....

Is the one played by Tina Fey. I just really can't stand this woman. That goofy accent, those goofy glasses and the constant "up do." I can't even listen to her voice. It's so annoying. Her constant sarcasm just makes me want to hurl. I realize that's politics as usual, but I just can't stand to listen to her use her down syndrome baby for sympathy from the voters one more time. What a loser. Please, let this woman go away after November 4th. I don't think I can stand to be subjected to her for at least four years!

If You're Going To Do It, Do It Right!

I learned this from one of my old pastor's in Dallas. I think of this phrase as I watch all the hullabloo going on with the financial disaster bailout in Washington. I was in the mortgage lending industry for 15 years. I have been a residential mortgage loan officer. I know about the subprime mortgage mess. I have done many of these loans for many customers. I remember sitting at my desk one day thinking how I had just completed a loan for 100% financing for a customer who couldn't buy a car with no money down. It was completely crazy and we all knew it was going to blow at some point. The flip side of that situation is that I and many of my loan officer friends tried. We tried to keep these customers from getting into these loans. All they wanted was the keys to the house. They didn't care about anything else despite our best efforts. So, I have a very hard time feeling sorry for many of these individuals. And, let's not forget the best part, if I refused to give them "substantially all of the financing they request", I could be in violation of the Fair Housing Act. Talk about a double edged sword!

So, on to my point. If we're going to go after "predatory lending", why is no one talking about the credit card companies?!? If any industry ever needed regulation, it's the credit card industry. They charge astronomical rates, change their terms to hurt their customers and trick them into late payments. Oh, and if you're late on a payment on one card, your other card companies will jack their rates up also. They change due dates all of a sudden so you will hopefully be late. This is an evil empire! So, why aren't we talking more about this? Can anyone say Lobbyist?

Well, I agree that if we were all living within our means and not using these cards, we wouldn't be in a mess so maybe no one should feel sorry for us either. I know that this is my family's first priority. No more credit card debt!! We are paying them off hell or high water at this point. We have not been chargers for a long time but we did have some credit card debt from before law school so now we want to concentrate on paying off the ones we have. They are from satan!

So, Washington, if you're going to do it, do it right and go after ALL predatory lenders and don't just stop halfway!

I just watched Obama's response on CNN. Basically, he's not suspending his campaign and doesn't want to put the debate on Friday on hold. Obama thinks this is the most important time to be out telling Americans who he is and what he stands for. Obama says, "President's have to be able to do more than one thing at once." Love it!

Boycott Lifeway Christian Stores!

This really burns me up. Read the following article below and you'll know why....

(CNN) -- In the 19 years that Teresa Hairston has published her magazine, GospelToday, she has never faced a major situation with Christian bookstores across the country that carry the publication.

She's tackled any number of issues over the years,and has featured a number of celebrities and ministers, ranging from Yolanda Adams to Bishop T.D. Jakes to Kirk Franklin.

But when the Atlanta, Georgia, entrepreneur decided to feature five female pastors on her cover this month, she says, Lifeway Christian Stores treated her like she had converted her Christian publication to something akin to the tastes of porn purveyor Larry Flynt.

Apparently, the owner of Lifeway, the Southern Baptist Convention, wasn't too happy with Hairston telling the story of female pastors, because the women go against their 2000 decree that only men can serve in the role of reverend or pastor.

According to Hairston, the Christian company didn't even give her the courtesy of a heads-up.

"We got an anonymous tip," she told me Tuesday on The Tom Joyner Morning Show, and after checking it out, she discovered that the magazine had been removed from the shelves in all of Lifeway's 100-plus stores nationwide and had been placed behind the counter.

"They have never called me," Hairston said. "Never sent an e-mail. Nothing. I had to go see my distributor to verify what they had done."

The actions of Lifeway didn't stun me. I had seen this movie before.

A few years ago, my wife was a longtime Lifeway teacher. She had taught at the company's teaching centers for years, but then one day, she was notified that she would have to take down her Web site and comply with their rules against female pastors or be dropped as a teacher. Her crime? Calling herself the Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin.

It wasn't that she did so for the heck of it. She graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; was the first female staff pastor at Houston's Brookhollow Baptist Church/the Church Without Walls, a Southern Baptist Convention church; and has been leading folks to the Lord all over the country for 20 years.

She was angered by Lifeway's decision but made it clear that she didn't serve the bookstore or even the Southern Baptist Convention. She made a commitment to serving Jesus Christ and was not about to back away from her call to ministry because a male-dominated organization decided that its interpretation of the Bible calls for a woman not to be in the pulpit.

So she cut them off and kept on calling herself the Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin.

Religious folks will quickly say that Scripture is clear that women can't be pastors and lead men, yet Hairston says that when she featured Pastor Paula White on her cover two years ago, Lifeway didn't take any action against the magazine.

Anyone who has served in a church or been a member of any faith knows that there are those who have strict interpretations of their faith's writings, while others have a different interpretation.

I've heard Brookhollow's pastor, the Rev. Dr. Ralph Douglas West Sr., preach several sermons stating that what Paul wrote in 2 Timothy with regards to only men preaching was specific to that church and not a blanket ban. Second, there were instances where Paul wrote that his views were his own and not mandates from God.

That is a doctrinal fight that any of us can have any time (and I love it how these same Bible thumpers ignore the biblical story of Deborah, who was a judge in the Old Testament -- and was over men).

But what is a greater issue is that Lifeway clearly has no respect for freedom of the press. Here is arguably the top Christian bookstore in the country making a decision based on their teachings and applying it to a magazine. A spokesman for Lifeway Resources, which runs the stores, was quoted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week as saying of female pastors, "It is contrary to what we believe."

So does Lifeway and, by extension, the Southern Baptist Convention, fight vigorously for freedom of religion, but it doesn't give a hoot about the other freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution?

I now wonder whether Lifeway makes it its business to cull through any number of magazines and search for stories that go against its doctrine and pull them from the shelves.

This is the kind of nonsense that drives more people away from religion. I suppose it's fitting that this story would come out the same time as Bill Maher releases his religious documentary, "Religulous," which skewers all the major religions for their dogma. I'm sure he feasted on positions of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The conduct of Lifeway and the Southern Baptist Convention is shameful, and they owe Hairston an apology for their actions. Yet she's taken it in stride, saying that instead of giving the company hell, she'll "give them heaven."

I say, give them a lot of hell for this, because they deserve it for action.

Palin's Photo Ops..

Also, it's very curious to me that the McCain camp is going to such great lengths to protect her. No questions from the press? No press allowed at the meeting with the Afghan President? Barely any interviews granted since their announcement with her as Veep? Sounds like she's busy with her crash course on world politics and the Republicans can't risk her looking too stupid. After all, they didn't hire her for her knowledge and experience, we all know this...

I Thought Republicans Wanted LESS Government?!?!

According to this article on CNN, McCain wants another new government agency to handle the economic crisis now? You know, this just means he doesn't have a clue what to do. Few people do, including Ben Bernanke. The Fed is notoriously late in taking action when everything around them is screaming for help in the economy. One of my former co-workers, who happens to be a UT finance grad and used to work on Wall Street, was talking to me about how all of this was going to happen almost two years ago. Literally. At least Obama is letting all of the supposed "experts" give their plan first before he blasts his own plan in the open. McCain, you're looking more desperate than ever. You have flip-flopped more than anyone else. You were the candidate of "experience" and then you hired Palin. Now all of a sudden, you practically stole Obama's idea and now you're the candidate of "change." Give me a break. It's all a little too late if you ask me...Copy cat...

Shopping After Ike

I made the short trek to our local H-E-B this morning only to find most of the shelves pretty empty. It looks like they haven't gotten a shipment since before the hurricane. I didn't find this unusual but it was a little scary seeing grocery store shelves so empty. I actually took a photo of the produce section when I first walked in the door. I was a little amazed. I've never seen anything like it..

You were in luck if you liked tomatoes! So, after getting a tip from my Boo's friend Binjo, we headed down to the Kroger about 3 miles away. They were well stocked and up and running! They had all the "keep cool" items like milk, eggs and cheese. You don't know how many worlds of meals this opens up to you until you don't have them!! Kroger also had gas at pre-hurricane prices!! I filled up with premium for $3.65/gallon! Plus, I had an additional .10 cents off for using my Kroger card so it was actually $3.55/gallon! The line for gas was orderly and quick because they had employees in the parking lot directing the traffic and helping to quickly move everyone along. So, we have food, gas (a full tank for at least one car!), power and A/C! Kroger, I am a customer for life!!

Just reading this morning that Sarah Palin will not be cooperating with the investigation into her firing of a State Trooper for her own personal reasons as well as lying (alledgely, added for my Boo). Apparently the McCain camp feels that the investigation has been "tainted" by Obama. Excuse me Sarah, you "tainted" yourself by being power hungry and getting your bully husband to help you. This investigation began before you were even nominated as Veep. Give me a break. This reeks of Bush/Cheney when they said they would only testify together and not under oath to the 9/11 commission. Why don't we just say, "it's okay to lie, we don't care."...

Get over it Sarah...You know what you did...

Surviving Ike

Well, we made it through Ike but the aftermath was a whole other deal! No power, which means no A/C almost killed us. We lost power around 4:00 am Saturday. We stuck it out Saturday and into Sunday morning but couldn't stand the hot, humid stillness. We bailed to Dallas to my Mom's house yesterday but are heading back to Houston tonight. I'm hoping that we will be able to get gas in Houston at this point. My hubby's boss wants to re-open her office despite the fact they have no power and no telephones and you can't use your cell phone in the area due to down towers. Yeah, she's not the smartest cookie in the jar.

Luckily, the hubby's parents in South West Houston got their power back this afternoon so we will probably stay with them until our power is restored in The Woodlands. We are thankful that it was not worse and of course, we pray for everyone on the coast who has it so much worse than we have it...

Ugh, Ike!

Well, we're preparing for yet another hurricane. It looks like Ike could actually hit close to Galveston and throw us for a loop. We live about 1 1/2 hours from Galveston but they say we could still see winds of 75 - 100 mph, and up to 10" of rain, depending on how strong it is when it makes landfall. When these storms approach, here are my greatest concerns:

No Electricity - which means no A/C! Sorry, I will leave for cooler ground...
No Cable - which means no access to news! I would go crazy!

We are pretty much surrounded by trees so if the winds do get that high, we're toast. We'll see what happens but for now we're not in a mandatory evacuation area so we're staying put. I gassed up the new GTI and bought some supplies and hopefully we won't need them!

A Response to EW...

I tried so hard to leave this alone and let my one response be enough. But, the more I think about it, even the day after seeing this on my blog, I find it still very hurtful. Not angering, but hurtful. This is the comment in question...

AH hah, another Liberal espousing what is accepted in academic circles as if a Republican can not be part of those circles. It is interesting how you liberals refer to the Republicans as intellectually inferior that are not capable of being part of your elitist group. When you can not debate you resort to ad hominem attacks on the opposing party. I never understood why disagreeing is received as a personal attack. Healthy debate is always good. Another observation I have made is how venomous and hateful you liberals can be. Signed Kris's Husband EW

There are several things about this comment that bother me. First, I realize that my comments, especially concerning politics can be feisty, angering and yes, sarcastic but frankly so can the person's that he's defending. I don't feel that I have ever outright insulted this person. I don't know how much EW reads my blog but I do know that he doesn't really even know me. I've spoken to this person for about an hour in my entire life. I don't think I have ever been "venomous and hateful." I really am hurt by that comment. The hurt surpasses the anger. I think that's why it bothers me so much. This couple is a part of a family that I respect so much. KW's Mom is one of the classiest ladies I have ever met. She usually has me in tears whenever I see her because she always compliments me and tells me how wonderful I am and what a great man my husband is. While I don't agree with everything he believes in, KW's Dad helps build churches around the world so that others can hear the gospel and have a place to build their faith. I had the same feelings about KW and EW. I have heard the story about EW's past and how he came back to his faith. I really respected that, but this whole episode may have completely severed our ties to this entire family. That's sad to me. Above all else, we have more important things that we do agree about. My response to KW's comment that elicited this retort was that I was tired of playing. I was. But, why, this? Maybe he felt the need to come to the defense of his wife. I understand that as I am the first to defend my husband. I am many things, but never venomous and hateful. Here are a few other things that I disagree with in this comment and felt the need to correct EW about:

I am not part of any elitist academic group. If you knew me better, you would know that I am still working on my undergrad degree! And, I absolutely never said Republicans were intellectually inferior. I simply stated that in academic circles, Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source of information and that is true. It was not meant to call your wife stupid or inferior.
Frankly, the only venom and anger I see was EW's comment. Why?
"Liberal"? I do not put myself in the category of liberal or conservative. I am a little of both and I embrace some ideals of all parties. I like to think I take what I think is the best of both and make my own purple party.
Disagreeing is not a personal attack but the disagreements were going too far on both sides. Frankly, this is what I wanted to avoid.
So, at the end of the day we have lost friends. I'm sad but I'm more sad to think that someone made such a harsh judgment about me based on a few blog postings. You know, I have bad days just like everyone else. Sometimes I make a post and later I think I was wrong, or God forbid, I change my mind. I guess I'm a "flip-flopper." I'm human. I'm a work in progress. I'm on a journey, just like EW. I'm sorry, EW, if I angered you enough to lash out like that. But, I'm not sorry for my views, my blogs or anything else. My blog is my blog and my comments are my comments. I will own them, right or wrong but I pray that I never, ever hurt someone.

Do We Truly Love All Freedoms?

Many are now trying to use this slip by Obama as his supposed admission of his Muslim faith. This is just so silly. First, wasn't this country founded because of religious persecution? What would be so wrong if he was a Muslim except that that isn't YOUR faith? I am a Christian. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe he died and rose again and is the atonement for my sins. I believe. But, if we are going to espouse the ideals of democracy so much that we force our beliefs on other nations then shouldn't we hold ourselves to those same ideals on the highest level? What does freedom of religion really mean to YOU? Does it mean that your religion is the only right religion or that we are tolerant individuals who, while we may not agree, can love and respect? I think the reason everyone is so scared that he is a Muslim is because Americans are being taught, mostly by the media, movies and our own government, to fear them. Not all Muslims hate Americans. Not all Muslims want to grow up to be human bombers. Not all Muslims want to follow Osama Bin Laden. Keep in mind that Christianity has had it's share of radicals as well. Remember the guy who blew up abortion clinics and killed people because of the pro-life stance? We are not called as Christians to kill. I bet if you ask ten pro-life Christians their stance on the death penalty, you will find all ten are also pro-death penalty. Yet another way even we Christians can be misunderstood by those of other faiths. We have to get past this. The same way I will not attack Romney for being a Mormon or Kennedy for being Catholic or anyone else is because I think we need to understand that freedom of religion is part of the very fabric of America. I think that someone could be of a religion other than mine and still run this country in an efficient manner. Yes, I believe that faith speaks to who we are. But I also know that many Christian leaders have messed up really bad on moral issues and we don't seem to hit them as hard. Moral issues of infidelity, cheating, stealing etc... Yes, we are called as Christians to go to all the world and tell the good news of the gospel and convert others to our faith. I just don't think hate and intolerance are the way to go about it. They will know you by your love. I am very passionate about my politics. A passion that some have mistaken for anger and hatred. That could be farther from the truth and frankly, those people don't know me very well. I have come a long way in the past eight years. My first reaction to 9/11 was "make the middle east a parking lot." Now, by God's grace, I have grown to a better understanding of who He is and why that attitude is only giving God a black eye. So, I think Obama is a Christian. After all, he was being bashed for his Christian pastor not that long ago. I think this was a slip. I have no concerns about this candidate that I still endorse. I hope that, as a nation, we can get over the discrimination against other faiths the same way we have tried (and not totally succeeded) to overcome discrimination against other races.

September 11th

This week is the anniversary of September 11th. Like most, I remember where I was and what I was doing that morning and I remember watching the second tower being hit by a plane on live television. It was a terrible day for our country. I have read many books, watched many documentaries and listened to the opinions of many people about the events of September 11, 2001. I could not get that day out of my mind and just kept asking "how could this happen?" With that question in mind, I delved into anything I could find on the subject of 9/11. This week many of those documentaries and specials I watched will air on television. The History Channel has several that I will be watching again and a few new ones. In my research I also came across many "conspiracy theories" and differing opinions about the events of that day. I encourage everyone to do their own research, watch the documentaries and draw your own conclusions. Many who know me would say I am a "conspiracy theorist" at heart. I don't think of that as a bad thing or an insult. In fact, it's a badge I'll wear. As Americans, it is our duty to question. It is our duty to not necessarily take the government at their word. I think we need to hear all sides, especially with a day like September 11th. Again, just because things may seem far fetched, doesn't mean they are not possible or not true. That's why we research, listen openly and draw our own conclusions. I agree with some and disagree with other alternative theories. The main conclusion that I have come to after my study is that there are many, many, many unanswered questions. Scarier to me than a conspiracy theory is the fact that we do not take the time to question at all...

RNC - Last Night...

I was sitting and actually enjoying McCain's speech so far when he was interrupted by a protestor in the crowd. Despite his efforts, for a few brief moments, his spotlight was stolen. Go Protestors!! This is the third time I've seen this happen during the RNC prime time speeches. How did they even get in the building?

I also just saw a sign that said "Environmentalists for McCain." I am laughing so hard right now. At least he's talking about alternative energy. He's not attacking it hard enough but at least it's a blip on his radar. I think we would see the big oil lobby win if he makes it to the oval office.

So, I think he gave a classier speech than Palin. She's so low class. I think Cindy McCain summed it up when she called her a moose hunting, salmon fishing, hockey mom-ing, pistol packing something or other. I think she meant it as a compliment. Then, at the end of the speech during the balloon drop they actually played that old song by Heart, "Barracuda." I think that's pretty accurate. I just don't like her.

McCain tried to come across as the party of change and that he's a reformer. He criticized the congress that he's been a part of for 26 years. I don't buy any of that but I was the least upset after his speech than any other night this week. No one can cast doubt about his service to America. His character is strong although I believe he was somewhat of a womanizer himself. I think that speaks to character also (yes, even for Clinton). I like that he encouraged Americans to get involved in their country but yet Palin attacked Community Organizers as pretty much useless. That doesn't jive. There was not enough talk about the economy, dealing with other countries, etc... Everyone leading up to this speech was very partisan in their speeches until tonight. Now all of a sudden we need to be non-partisan and reach out and share the credit?Hum...

Overall, it was a "C" speech in my opinion and he's still n0t even close to winning my vote.

Community Organizers

Well, the attacks on Community Organizers really set me off last night. What a bunch of pretentious twits. Community Organizers step in when politicians fail their communities. They provide leadership, build relationships and strengthen this country's communities. Apparently, the Republicans don't think that is valuable. If I were a Community Organizer, I would not be happy but I wouldn't be surprised either. It's just one more way the Republicans have proved themselves to be out of touch and in the dark about real issues.

You just lost me with this line. "Al-Quaida terrorists are planning attacks on our country and our opponent is worried we won't read them their rights." This is so scary. We have a these little documents Sarah, called THE CONSTITUTION AND BILL OF RIGHTS. Perhaps you should go to Washington DC, since you've never been there and check them out. This proves that she and McCain will continue to stomp on both of these documents and the truths that that hold our country together.

Also, she keeps saying "opponent" and "democratic nominee". You would have thought someone would have told her his name...

AND...did the same person write all of these speeches? I've heard the same lines about five different times now from five different people...

Also, I'm tired of hearing about McCain's POW status and his years in the armed services. Frankly, there are many people who have done that and still couldn't run the country... Sure, I respect that about him but it really doesn't sway me.

Well, I've had a little time to listen to CNN in the background and heard a little about this Sarah Palin. Most of what I've heard about her, I actually like. But, it's only day one...

McCain on the other hand is really ticking me off right now. The more I think about it, the more I think he picked her for these top two reasons:

1. She's a woman - now both tickets can make history. What a desperate move.
2. She's a woman - He thinks women are stupid enough to vote for this ticket merely because she is a woman.

I think he just called me stupid people!! Excuse me, but no one, not even a female, gets my vote without a little thought, and without me understanding where they are on certain issues. In fact, this choice makes me think McCain is an even bigger sexist, old school, boys club geezer than before.

Ugh, I'm DEFINITELY wearing my Obama shirt today...

Leading Ladies v The Best Friend

This is a new name for a concept that my hubby and I heard in the movie "The Holiday" starring the awesome Kate Winslet. There are "leading ladies" and "best friends" in Hollywood Movies. Some women are leading ladies and some women are best friends. Another way to put this is "Leaders v. Followers". My hubby tells me I am a leading lady and that is why I have a hard time working for other leading ladies or leading men. Needless to say, his boss, and my former boss, was a leading lady, although not a very good one in my opinion. As you guessed, I no longer work there. Let's just say there was a major blow up two weeks ago and one last Friday. I am totally incapable of putting up with the B.S. she dishes out. I gave my two weeks notice and the boss lady told me to leave. I could rant about her for a while but why bother.

So, the hubby thinks I need to go back to being a leading lady. I think I need to go back to making money. One way to solve both issues is to become a mortgage loan officer again. I left this career less than a year ago thinking I would never go back. But, for some reason, it always comes up. Have you ever tried to run away but ended up feeling like the calf in a rodeo? No matter how fast you run, the rope always makes it around your neck and you get tied back into the situation... That's how I feel about the mortgage business. It would be a place for me to go and with A LOT of hard work, I could build a business that would potentially make me A LOT of money (once the market bounces back).

So, what should I do? Look for another "follower" position and keep my mouth shut and learn to take it? Or, should I decide to work hard, not take the easy way out, and go for being a loan officer again? It would take time to make money and it would take a lot of time, effort and getting out of my comfort zone but it could yield a great payoff for my family. What do you think?

Well, I see John boy has broken up with Jennifer. Seriously, I think this proves his man-ho status. I saw this video where he's attempting to explain how "honest" he is. He is saying how "he's going through something personal" where he has to "give up" everything. Dude, why start it then? Geez, write a song or something man.

Good grief Johnny. Just say you want to sleep with them until you're bored and then you want to move on to the next. I would respect you more if you were honest. Ugh, I'm deleting him from my iTunes and iPod.

Found Another One!

I have a song on my iPod that I heard on KSBJ (Houstonians will know the station) and really loved it. It's a song by a guy named Brandon Heath. Song title, "I'm not who I was"... I had never heard of him until I heard the song and really still didn't know much about him.

This morning we visited part of the Woodlands United Methodist Church called "The Loft." It's a more laid back worship experience with a good mix of older and younger adults. Music was good, preaching was just "okay". Well, I almost fell asleep during the sermon actually. That normally only happens to me at Operas.

So, guess who was the worship leader at The Loft? None other than Brandon Heath. He has a new CD coming out on Tuesday and he's performing songs tonight at The Loft in The Woodlands. I think we're going to go check it out. Oh, and Brandon won the Dove Award for Best New Artist this year. He's also on Reunion Records, home to the late, great master, Rich Mullins...

Boy, even little girls in China are not exempt from the torture of being told they're not good enough.

A cute all on her own, 7 year old girl, sang the song "Ode To The Motherland" for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics but Chinese "officials" deemed her just too darn ugly to perform live in front of the world. Instead, they had another little girl they thought was "cuter" lip sync it.

What a crock. As Susan Powter would say... "STOP THE INSANITY!!"...
